Sleep, Dreaming & Waking: Understanding and Working with Dreams

Imagine the following:  We are standing on the shore of consciousness.  There is a bridge that spans across an expanse that stretches from day to the end of night from consciousness to the bottomless depths of unconsciousness.   The other shore of course can’t be seen; It is the unconscious. So we begin the trek on this bridge, this royal road.  There are few road signs.  Those that can be detected are misleading.  One inevitably reaches a mysterious gap, as if the bridge suddenly ended and one was left only to imagine….

Given the complexity of dreams, how does one optimally approach understanding and working with dreams. The goals of the workshop are three-fold: 1) to increase participants understanding of dreams; 2) to refine their ability to utilize dreams creatively and effectively in their personal life and therapeutic work; 3) to explore the relationships among three states of being: sleep, dreaming and waking.

The format of the workshop combines lecture, discussion and experiential work with dreams. Participants will learn be introduced to a basic neuroscientific understanding of dreaming.  Different contemporary approaches to dreams will be discussed. Participants will be introduced a particular approach to working with dreams called Dream Tending that is based on the work of Stephen Aisenstat, Ph.D., who was founder and president of Pacifica Graduate School. Participants will also be introduced to a particular approach to working with dreams in groups called social dreaming.  This method was developed by Gordon Lawrence, an English Psychoanalyst.
